Description

We are delighted to send you details of the London Netsuke Symposium 2010, which will be held to coincide with the annual Asian Art in London week.

The symposium will be held at Dartmouth House in Charles Street, Mayfair,  home of the English Speaking Union. The ESU is a private club and we will have sole use of the first floor for all four days, as well as the ground floor at the weekend. A buffet lunch will be provided daily except Monday by Leith's catering. We will have a full programme of lectures and workshops by  familiar and less familiar speakers and hopefully some presentations that will provoke lively discussion and general participation. In the afternoons you will be able to browse the exhibitions of participating UK and international dealers.

Very competitively priced rooms have been reserved for symposium delegates at the Washington Mayfair Hotel, a moment's walk away from Dartmouth House. The newly modernised hotel offers comfortable accommodation with free wifi in every room and is ideally located for the restaurants and pubs of historic Shepherds Market, close to Green Park tube, Piccadilly and Bond Street. The Classic double room with full English breakfast is £165 per night, exclusive of vat and taxes. To book a room at this special rate please contact Roger at Travelharbour: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , tel: (44) 208 329 3945.

London has much to offer afficionados of netsuke and Japanese art in general during Asian Art in London with museum and dealer exhibitions and specialist auctions. Individual gallery openings are held on Sunday evening in the St James's area and Christie's South Kensington and Mayfair and Bonham's on the Monday evening. On the Friday evening we will host a welcome dinner to give you an opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. Twenty years have passed since the last London netsuke convention and for several delegates this will be their first such event.

Description

Dartmouth House is a large and luxurious Georgian house in Mayfair, central London, England. It now acts at the headquarters for the English-Speaking Union (ESU), an educational charity.[1] It is located at 37 Charles Street, southwest off Berkeley Square. Over 40,000 people use the building each year.[2]
There is a painted ceiling by Pierre-Victor Galland above the grand staircase.[2] In the 1890s, the house was remodelled and refurbished by Edward Charles Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke, a banker, in an Anglo-French style. In 1926, it was purchased by the ESU in 1926.
Dartmouth House is an important heritage building in Mayfair. It has been upgraded by the UK government Department of Culture, Media and Sport to be a Grade II* listed building.
